What is CNC Screw / Swiss Turning?


CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Screw or Swiss Turning is a subtractive manufacturing machining technology.  The origins of this technology started in Switzerland in the late 1800s to efficiently produce large quantities of complex parts like screws for the watch industry.  The technology has evolved greatly over the years with the advent of CNC and other technological advancements.  Screw / Swiss turning machines use a sliding headstock with movement in the Z axis instead of a fixed headstock of a conventional lathe.  As the headstock moves, the bar stock is feed through a chucking collet and guide bushing into the machine enclosure, where static and rotating side and end mounted cutting tools turn, mill, contour, drill and tap the bar stock into the desired part with 7 to 13 axis machining.  With the ability to use multiple tools simultaneously, Screw / Swiss turning can produce complex parts with highly efficient cycle times.

 

When to use CNC Screw / Swiss Turning?


This process is ideal for small complex parts with turning and milling steps, high part volumes, complex geometries with moderate to tight tolerances.
