GENERAL DESCRIPTION

click to resize photo Torlon ® PAI is the highest performing melt processable plastic. It has superior resistance to elevated temperatures. It is capable of performing under severe stress conditions at continuous temperatures to 500°F (260°C). Parts machined from Torlon ® PAI stock shapes provide greater compressive strength and higher impact resistance than most advanced engineering plastics. Its extremely low coefficient of linear thermal expansion and high creep resistance deliver excellent dimensional stability over its entire use range. PAI is an amorphous material with a Tg (glass transition temperature) of 537°F (280°C).

Depending upon the method used to produce a stock shape (sheet, rod, or tube), the properties of the resulting material can vary. Generally speaking, the best mechanical properties are exhibited by injection molded material. However, the process used is generally defined by the size and shape of the desired material. For example, small diameter rod and thin sheets are extruded -- larger shapes are compression molded. See the following descriptions and properties table for details.

TORLON ® CARBON-REINFORCED PAI

Torlon 7130 PAI (Extruded)

Torlon ® 7130 is 30% carbon reinforced, extruded PAI. It offers exceptional stiffness, nonabrasive wear performance and the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion and the best fatigue resistance of all plastic materials. This grade is similar in composition to Torlon ® 7530 PAI (compression molded). Key applications for Torlon 7130 include metal replacement, sliding vanes, aerospace parts, impellers, shrouds, pistons, and housings.

Extruded Torlon ® 7130 PAI is typically only available in thin sheets and small diameter rods. Check with us for availability of 7130 in the size you need.

Torlon 7530 PAI (Compression Molded)

Torlon ® 7530 compression molded PAI is the same formulation as 7130, but has been made into stock shapes using a different manufacturing process. The resulting material is similar to 7130, but has slightly different mechanical properties (see datasheet below).

Compression-molded Torlon ® 7530 is typically available only in larger diameter rods (in short lengths), thicker sheets, and large (but short length) tubes. Check with us for availability of 7530 in the size you need.
